F1 Puns and Team Radios Used on Website and Packaging

Back in our headquarters, we worked hard to design every single bit of our communication package so that it makes a true F1 fan think “SIMPLY LOVELY”. Yeah, even that last sentence.

However, we realise that not all of you who visit the website and buy the beer may remember everything ever said on the team radio or during a press conference. Or, well, you may be buying them as a gift for a friend and have absolutely no idea what we did there.

Therefore, we wrote this blog post as a guide for you to better understand what’s behind the text on our landing page and the package you will receive your beer with. First things first, let’s start with our name, slogan, and social media username.

Brand

Plan.Beer

You couldn’t imagine the range of reactions to our brand name, depending on whether we tell it to a Formula 1 fan or someone who has never watched a single race. The former say it’s genius, while the latter simply look back at us confused.

The name comes from Ferrari’s trademark strategy calls over team radio, saying to their drivers “We’re thinking Plan B”. So when we started our beer brand for F1 fans, naming it was the easiest part.

You Will Have The Drink

Hungary 2018. Kimi asked whether his drink was on or not, to which his race engineer replied “You will not have the drink”. Obviously, that would have made for a terrible slogan, so we decided to reverse it. Ain’t that cool, huh?

@el.plan.beer

When creating our social media profiles, we sadly realised that @plan.beer was already taken as a username. However, we found a quick fix and added an “el” in front. Where does that come from? Alonso’s El Plan! He explains what it is in the following video (starting at 2:55).

Landing Page

If you’ve already had the chance to look at our landing page, you must have noticed just how full it is with quotes and puns. Here they are. Explained.

“Honestly, what are we doing here…?”

Instead of going for the boring “About” to describe Plan.Beer, we got a little creative and replaced it with Vettel’s team radio from Spain 2016, when Ricciardo sent it down the inside and almost collected Sebastian, which made the German ask the notorious “Honestly, what are we doing here, racing or ping pong?”

“A short view back to the past”

That being the headline to our collection with legendary drivers, it almost looks like it could have been rewritten a bit and have enough meaning on its own. But thanks to one gem of a press conference question – the longest one ever asked, in fact – we made it even more relevant to hardcore F1 fans by using the opening sentence of the question.

If you no longer go for a beer with paintings of drivers that exists…

The description under the beer with Senna’s painting on the landing page is no accident. We took the idea from arguably the most famous interview in F1 between him and Sir Jackie Stewart, and made a slight tweak to what is arguably the greatest quote by any driver, to make a masterpiece of our own.

Le Professeur

Alain’s approach to a race, always so smooth and calculated, earned him this famous nickname. He always conserved every part of the car to perfection – tyres, brakes, engine, you name it – and in this way managed to get the most out of it without necessarily having to go the quickest (even though he definitely had the ability to). We could not help but honour that in our description of the beer with Prost’s painting.

Give him gloves, steering wheel, and a drink and leave him alone

Kimi. How could we not use THAT quote in the description of a beer with his painting on. Furthermore, even if it weren’t for his title with Ferrari and his 21 race wins, this team radio alone makes him deserve to be on any list of F1 legends!

And colossally that's Mansell!

This is one of the most famous Murray Walker commentaries. It happened at the 1986 Australian Grand Prix, the final race of the season. Mansell was leading the championship by 6 points ahead of Prost and 7 ahead of Piquet. He was on course to win it, when in the 65th lap his right rear tyre exploded at 180 mph, which ended his race in a dramatic fashion. It was in this moment when Murray screamed on broadcast "Look at that! And colossally that's Mansell!"

Package

We don’t want to spoil too much about the package before you get it delivered, but we promise there’s a looot of text on all sides that you'd certainly enjoy.

F*cking finally!

We didn’t get vulgar just for the sake of it. This exclamation that you’d find on the front of your package is actually something Kimi said after his final race win in Austin 2018. A win he had been waiting for over 4 years at that point. And with it, he broke the record for the longest gap between race wins!

You won’t have to wait for that long to get your beer, though. But we know just how impatient you’d be until you finally get it, right?

Simply Lovely

These are the words printed out on top of the package. The last thing you’d see before finally having the beer in your hands. But where does it come from? It’s kind of like a trademark Verstappen expression! Yeah, here’s a compilation of him saying it:
